What is Sattvik Food ?

 




Ayurveda divides food into three categories - Sattvik, Rajasic,  and Tamasic. 

Sattvik food is mainly fresh and nourishing vegetarian food either cooked or raw, promotes clear mind, always easy to digest, cooked with love and eaten with gratitude and awareness.

Rajasic food is very spicy, includes food with garlic and onion, coffee, soft drinks, refined sugar.  makes you feel aggressive, passionate and fierce after eating it

Tamasic food is highly over processed, non vegetarian, fried, frozen, microwaved, takes a very long time to digest, makes you feel dull, lethargic, and/or intoxicated after eating.

Lets take an example of a Potato:
Here, Sattvik food would be a boiled potato with some salt and pepper. Rajasic would be a potato curry with lots of spices, cooked with onions, garlic, oil, salt. Tamasic would be fries, processed potato chips.

Overall, Ayurveda recommends to mainly eat Sattvik food, have Rajasic food as per our energy demands and reduce Tamasic food.
